Use of the Telephone
Telephones in the Office
We rely upon you to keep personal calls to a minimum on your office telephone; however we do recognise that there may be occasional circumstances where they may be necessary. If this position is abused, we reserve the right to use the Disciplinary and Performance Improvement Policy.
Personal Mobile Telephones
Most employees will have their own personal mobile telephone and we recognise that today it is the standard way in which you are contacted for personal and other business. It is, however, disruptive in the office to have both office and personal mobile phones in use. We would therefore ask that if you wish to have your personal mobile switched on - that the ring tone is switched off. As an alternative, we suggest you leave the phone on vibrate. This way, you will be able to monitor your calls without disrupting others. As above, if you need to make or receive personal calls on your mobile, we request that you keep them to a minimum or make them during your lunch break.
Picking up or using any type of phone or similar device that is, or must be held, to operate it, would be breaking the law. The only exemption is for calls to 999 (or 112) in genuine emergencies where it is unsafe or impractical to stop. The Company will not pay for any fines incurred.
Company drivers are only permitted to use company mobile phones whilst in their vehicles and only in conjunction with the fully integrated hands free kit in the vehicle or when the vehicle is parked in a safe place. You are not authorised to set up personal mobiles with any hands free kits whilst in a Company vehicle.
Company Mobile Telephones
Driving when using a hand held mobile phone is illegal, and you may be fined £30. This can be increased to a maximum of £1000 if the driver denies committing the offense and the matter goes to court.

You can also be prosecuted for using a hands free mobile phone, if you fail to have proper control of your vehicle. The penalties for driving carelessly or dangerously when using any phone can include disqualification, a large fine and up to 2 years imprisonment.
Please note that the police can still use existing legislation if a driver is distracted by a call on a hands-free phone. There is still therefore the risk of prosecution for careless or dangerous driving.
If you consider that this policy will materially impact your ability to carry out your job function, then please contact your Manager.
Depending on your job role, you may be provided with a mobile telephone for business use.
