Eye Tests
What are the VDU Display Screen Regulations?
The A1 Group will comply with The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992. Although the majority of the responsibilities lie with the A1 Group, you are responsible for understanding the regulations and ensuring that you comply where you have direct control. You must also ensure that potential problems are identified and notified to a Director and your Manager.
Some employees would not be classified as VDU users using the strict definitions in the guidelines. However, for simplicity and to ensure that everyone has the same protection it has been decided that every employee of the A1 Group is covered. There is no legal duty to provide eye-tests, glasses or training for contractors.
Where you are working on customers’ premises, your Manager must take responsibility to ensure that the provisions of the legislation are met. Any problems should be raised with the customer immediately. The customer also has a legal duty to meet the full requirements of the legislation with the exception of eyesight tests, funding of 'glasses' and training.
Eyes and eyesight
There is no reliable evidence that work with VDUs causes any permanent damage to eyes or eyesight, but it may make users with pre-existing visual defects more aware of them. Research would indicate that up to 10% of employees might need glasses purely for VDU work.
